The Locksmith Files 25! Buying a Safe, What you need to know.

With all the banks closing down their branches in the UK, we can no longer rely on them to keep our valuables safe in branch. We are contacted regularly by customers who have been asked to remove their items from the branch before it closes. We are also finding that insurance companies are also insisting on valuable being kept in a suitable safe if the customer wants them covered under the policy.

Before ordering a safe, there are a few things you need to know, so you can make an informed decision and order the correct safe for your needs.

Firstly, what will you be keeping in the safe? Do you need any fire protection for documents? Do you need fire protection for data such as backup tapes? Or is it just for cash and valuable such as jewellery? A note on storing data, A standard fire safe will not protect data from fire. It must be a data safe which is designed to protect data from the heat.

Safe are rated by insurance cash cover, such as a safe with a £4,000 overnight cash cover, an insurance company will insure you upto a maximum of £4,000 in cash to be kept in the safe overnight. You can normally times this by ten for Jewellery and valuables to £40,000. However, the total value of the items must never exceed the cash rating of the safe, for example you could not keep £4,000 in cash and £40,000 in Jewellery and valuables in a safe with a £4,000 Cash Rating.

A guide to safe ratings, after £4,000 the safes are rated in Euro Grades to make it easier to recommend the correct safe for your needs.

. Grade 0 £6,000 Cash Cover or £60,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 1 £10,000 Cash Cover or £100,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 2 £17,500 Cash Cover or £175,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 3 £35,000 Cash Cover or 350,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 4 £60,000 Cash Cover or 600,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 5 £100,000 Cash Cover or £1,000,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 6 £150,000 Cash Cover or £1,500,000 Jewellery Cover

. Grade 7 £250,000 Cash Cover or £2,500,000 Jewellery Cover

We always recommend you have a look at the value of the items you would like to keep in the safe, and think ahead 10 years! If you are a collector will you be increasing your collection? Will the items go up in value? You don’t want to have to replace the safe in 3 years or add an additional one, because the safe rating is not high enough to cover the items.

You will also need to decide on the size of the safe, which will also determine position of the safe. Jewellery and watch boxes can take up a lot of room. Make sure the safe will be large enough to accommodate.

Locking Options available are Keylocking and Electronic locking, Dual locking on Grade 4 units and above.

Next we need to decide where the safe is going to be installed. With the Euro Graded Safes due to the weight, it is very unlikely the safe will be installed upstairs unless the floor and stairs have been reinforced by a structural engineer.

We always carry out Site Surveys and Risk Assessments. Things to bear in mind, will the safe fit through available openings to position. How many steps into the building and is there easy access for delivery. Floor type, Concrete or Wood. Do you have underfloor heating? this is very difficult to detect as the pipes are plastic in most cases. Incidentally, if you do have underfloor heating, we can bond the safe to the floor. However, you really need to be sure of positioning, as once bonded its not moving. We can fix to concrete and wooden floors and solid walls, or a mix of both. Higher graded safes need to be fixed at 2 points.

The Locksmith Files 21! Convenient Garden Gate Security.

Securing Garden Gates is a must these days. I am often asked if it is possible to secure a garden gate, without having to use a key. The answer is most definitely, with an externally rated digital lock. They are available coded from the outside and coded on both sides.

Digital Gate Lock Nightlatch

These are coded from the outside with a rim mounted Nightlatch on the inside.

Internal Nightlatch of a Digital Gate Lock.
Internal code lock from a back to back code lock
External coded and latch from a back to back code lock

Both options are able to have the code changed without the need to remove the lock from the gate first. On the back to back model each coded unit can have independent codes, so you can have separate codes for entry and exit.

For external applications we always recommend using Marine Grade Finish Coded Locks, as you don’t want your gate locks to rust during the first winter .

The Locksmith Files 20! Should I Change the Locks on My New Home?

In Short, Yes Most Definitely!

We always recommend you change the locks when you move into a new house, Whether it’s a new build home or a 1930’s home. Reasons, Let’s deal with New Build Homes First:

As you can imagine, while a home is being built there are lots of trades involved, Electricians, Plumbers, Plasterers, Kitchen Fitters, Window and Door Installers, Bathroom Fitters etc, Just to name a few. Each trade will have been in possession of a key to that house at some stage, and as you can imagine keys get lost, misplaced and some are not handed back. So when you move in, you just don’t know who has keys.

Older houses which are not new build, will have a history of occupiers, who may not hand over all the keys because some were lost or packed away. They may have given keys out to children who past them onto boyfriends/Girlfriends. Relatives may have been given copies, Workmen and Gardiner’s etc.

So you have decided to have the locks changed, This would be an ideal time to make sure your locks are Insurance/Police Approved. Incidentally, If you do not change the locks, you may not be covered by your insurance, as you cannot prove who has keys and if you are broken into, you may not be covered. Always check with your Insurance Company.

So how do I know if my locks comply and how do I make sure the new locks comply? Well most modern houses will have either UPVC or Wooden Composite Doors, where you lift up the handle and turn the key to lock. These should be fitted with 3* Diamond Grade Cylinders. See below

3* Diamond Grade Cylinder

The 3* and Kite Mark on the front of the cylinder indicates it is a cylinder type your insurance company is looking for.

On older houses with traditional wooden doors, you are looking for a Kitemark, such as the one on the lock pictured below.

As always, if in doubt speak to your local MLA (Master Locksmiths Assiciation) Approved Locksmith.

We Recommend ABS Anti-Snap Cylinders

Thames Valley Lock and Safe recommend the Avocet ABS Cylinder range to secure your home and business. 74% of burglaries are through a door, So how does ABS Protect?

Patented Active Cam Technology

The clever locking system of the Avocet ABS® diamond grade cylinder knows when it has been snap attacked and fires into action to create a robust barrier to entry.

The patented Active Cam Technology™ is hidden deep within a solid Molybdenum cam which is 20% stronger than steel, and delivers ultimate resistance against a lock snapping attack and snap/twist manipulation.

All of the snap technology is focused on the outside part of the lock only. This makes sure that maximum strength is given to the inner part of the lock – the part that has the job of securing your door.

Two Sacrificial Break Points

The external (outside) part of an ABS® lock has two sections that will break away if an intruder attempts to attack the lock.

If the first section is removed your ABS® key can still be inserted into the lock to safely open the door.

If the second sacrificial section is removed the ABS Active Cam Technology will fire into action to lock off both the cam and access into your home!

16 Anti Drill Pins,  The ABS® lock is packed full of anti-drill pins to totally secure the cylinder against drilling.

Lock Bumping and Pick Protection

First of all its important to note that lock bumping and picking are skills acquired by locksmiths with years and years of experience – And in our experience are not used by the opportunistic burglar.

Lock bumping is a method of entry that uses a modified key which is tapped with a rubber mallet or tool to make the pins jump to the shear line within the cylinder – the result is quick and quiet access.

ABS has an advanced magnetic anti-bump and double pin within pin system which effectively stops lock bumping keys from opening the lock.

ABS Passes Every Test

Avocet ABS® locks are tested regularly and independently by police, locksmiths and security professionals.

ABS is the only lock to have held the Sold Secure Diamond accreditation every year since launched in 2010.

ABS is accredited and tested to the following standards:
